When patients come to me, they often seek more than treatment. They seek clarity. A diagnosis may already have been made. Surgery may have been suggested. A scan or report may have raised concerns. Yet patients and their families are often left with important questions.
These questions deserve careful discussion.
Over more than four decades in surgery, including specialist training in Dundee, Scotland, under the world renowned Surgical Gastroenterlogist and pioneer in Laparoscopic Surgery, Prof Alfred Cuschieri, I have learned that every patient is different.
For some, surgery is the right answer. For others, it may not be necessary. My role is to understand the problem carefully, evaluate the available options and recommend what is most appropriate for the individual patient.

The assessment and treatment of gallstone disease, gallbladder inflammation, and related complications are typically handled by a General Surgeon who specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgery or by a Surgical Gastroenterologist.

The management of inguinal, umbilical, incisional, and complex abdominal wall hernias is a specialty often handled by a General Surgeon, who may employ techniques from Minimally Invasive Surgery. Furthermore, a Surgical Gastroenterologist may also play a role in the treatment of these hernias to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

The evaluation and surgical treatment of benign and malignant liver conditions is typically performed by a General Surgeon who specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgery techniques. Additionally, a Surgical Gastroenterologist may also be involved in managing these complex cases.

The treatment of conditions affecting the stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum is often managed by a General Surgeon or a Surgical Gastroenterologist. Many of these procedures now employ Minimally Invasive Surgery techniques, leading to improved recovery times and better outcomes.

Caring for patients with pancreatic cysts, tumors, and other pancreatic diseases often necessitates the expertise of a General Surgeon or a Surgical Gastroenterologist, especially when exploring options like Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Surgical management, especially under the guidance of a General Surgeon utilizing techniques like Minimally Invasive Surgery, is essential in a multidisciplinary treatment approach, often led by a Surgical Gastroenterologist.
Listening carefully to a patient's symptoms, concerns and circumstances often provides the most important clues. Investigations and scans help confirm and refine a diagnosis, but they rarely replace the value of a thoughtful consultation.
I believe patients should never feel rushed. Taking the time to listen, answer questions and explain a condition clearly is an important part of treatment itself. When patients understand what they are facing and why a particular treatment is recommended, uncertainty gives way to confidence.
A confident patient is better prepared for treatment. A confident patient develops trust in the treatment plan. And a confident patient often recovers better.
Listen, understand, use your expertise, tests only when needed. Everything else will follow.

Patients often seek a second opinion when a general surgeon recommends surgery, as they desire additional clarity before proceeding with treatment. A second opinion is not about questioning another doctor; rather, it is about understanding the diagnosis, exploring the available options, including minimally invasive surgery, and making an informed decision with confidence. If you would like your reports, scans, and treatment recommendations reviewed by a surgical gastroenterologist, I would be happy to help.
